Dating seems pretty straightforward. Boy meets girl—or boy! Girl meets boy—or girl! Someone asks them out on a date. The other accepts or refuses. And a relationship may—or may not—grow from there.
This is a fairly stereotypical look at the beginnings of a mainstream relationship—but how men and women date can vary largely depending on where in the world they call home. There are cultural differences in dating based on time-honored traditions and customs. Various religions and/or cultures still practice arranged marriages and other courtship activities that some might deem antiquated. And some societies have very different thoughts on unconventional relationships, such as those of the Sugar variety.
How the Sugar Baby Lifestyle Differs From Nation to Nation
All of these intricacies sparked some curiosity on whether or not the Sugar Bowl experience is different from nation to nation and culture to culture. This idea is being explored in SeekingArrangement’s Sugaring Abroad article series, which takes a snapshot of Sugaring in different locations around the world.
Additionally, SeekingArrangement recently gathered data from members in a number of nations to identify the most popular cities for Sugar Babies and Sugar Daddies across the globe. The planet’s number one Sugar Dating website has compiled lists for a handful of countries, from Australia to the U.K. and Indonesia to Mexico.
SeekingArrangement’s Sugaring Abroad series began with South Africa, with testimonial tea from SA Brand Ambassador Emma. The series then jumped continents to India and Indonesia, exploring the Sugar culture in Southeast Asia. And this week, Sugaring Abroad lands a little northeast of there, with an installment about Japan.
Sugar Babies in Japan
The 11th most populous country in the world—and one of the most densely populated and urbanized regions on the globe—Japan has an extremely unique culture that has been influenced by its historical past as well as western influences. One of the world’s great economic and military powers, Japan is also internationally known for its art, music, cuisine and popular culture—most notably its animation and video-game entertainment industries.
Japan has a long history of arranged marriage and the practice of omiai, a Japanese custom in which men and women are introduced to each other to consider the possibility of marriage. These traditions waned over the decades as Japan became a more modern nation. Recent reports indicate that professional matchmaking is making a resurgence, citing the lack of time adults have to go on dates as a reason for its increasing popularity.
Sugar Babies in Japan: Different Forms of Sugar Dating
Many singles in Japan, however, have turned to Sugar Dating to find companionship. Most recently, a form of dating known as “papakatsu” or “mamakatsu” has become a popular trend that is widely talked about in Japanese and international media.
“[It is] exactly the same as Sugar Dating. It [has been] quite popular among young women in Japan for the last few years,” says one SeekingArrangement member, a Sugar Baby living in Yokohama.
Japan Today describes the practice as “the pursuit by young women of older, preferably well-heeled men for financial security and whatever other reassurance that only maturity can offer.” The publication adds that papakatsu is mostly popular among Japanese women in their early twenties.
While papakatsu is described as being quite similar to Sugar Dating, many who practice this form of dating are quick to mention that physical attraction and amorous feelings aren’t part of the arrangement. Men who engage in papakatsu simply want the privilege of a beautiful woman’s presence.
“Why not turn my youth into a financial asset?,” one 22-year-old university student told Japan Today.
And while papakatsu has become something that many are comfortable talking about, many Sugar Babies aren’t as open about Sugar Dating in general. “Only my close friends know that I’m on SeekingArrangement,” says our Sugar Baby in Yokohama, adding that a widespread—and often false—idea about Sugar Dating is that it’s closely connected to extra-marital affairs.
Sugar Babies in Japan: Yokohama
With 209 Sugar Daddies and 380 Sugar Babies, Yokohama sits at Number 3 on the Top 10 Sugar Cities in Japan. Yokohama is Japan’s second largest city by population and lies a little over 20 miles south of the capital of Tokyo on the shores of Tokyo Bay. It’s a major commercial hub of the Greater Tokyo Area, and is known for being a prominent port city, the headquarters of Nissan and hosting the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
The ninth and tenth most popular cities for Sugar Babies and Daddies in Japan are also part of the Greater Tokyo Area. Saitama, Number 9, is home to 45 Sugar Daddies and 96 Sugar Babies, while 33 Sugar Daddies and 82 Sugar Babies live in Kawasaki, rounding out the list at Number 10.

Sugar Babies in Japan: Tokyo
And of course Tokyo took the top spot on the Top 10 Sugar Cities in Japan, with 2,319 Sugar Daddies and 7,561 Sugar Babies calling Japan’s capital city home. This comes as no surprise, as Tokyo is not only Japan’s most populous city, but also the most populous metropolitan center in the world. If you’re looking for some sweet Sugar in Japan, Tokyo is the destination!
Naomi, a Tokyo-based Sugar Baby, says that while papakatsu is extremely popular, most women looking for a Sugar-based relationship turn to online dating. “In Japan, most girls are looking for a Sugar Daddy on specialized matching sites” like SeekingArrangement.
While our Tokyo-based SB says SeekingArrangement and other Sugar dating sites are most popular, she also mentions the existence of dating clubs and other distinctive forms of Sugar Dating unique to Japan. One such activity is called gyaranomi, which loosely translates to a party that women are paid to attend simply to drink and mingle with successful men.
Sugar Babies in Japan: The Toyko SB Life
The Tokyo SA member tells us that many SBs in Japan’s capital city are taken care of by their SDs purely in order for them to live in the sprawling metropolis. “Sometimes there are gifts and such, but … it takes money to live in the city. I can’t continue a relationship with anyone but a Sugar Daddy who can understand that.”
And as Tokyo is an international finance center home to a number of the globe’s largest investment banks and insurance companies, there couldn’t be a better place to find a successful gentleman in Japan. The capital city is also conducive to the Sugar lifestyle—Tokyo is a fashion epicenter, has a storied cultural past, and is home to over 200 Michelin-starred restaurants. Can you imagine the potential for Sugar Dating? A table for two at Joël Roubuchon’s restaurant and a shopping spree through the popular Harajuku district would be a dream date for any Sugar Baby—right?!
Sugar Babies in Japan: Top Cities
Following Tokyo on SeekingArrangement’s Top Sugar Cities in Japan list is Osaka, the historical capital of Japan where 239 SDs and 544 SBs reside. The city lies in the larger Keihanshin region, which also includes two other cities on SA’s list: Kyoto (home to 79 SDs and189 SBs) lands at Number 6 and Kobe (with 90 SDs and 160 SBs) follows in seventh place. Completing the list is Nagoya, coming in at Number 4 with 155 SDs and 369 SBs, followed by Number 5 city Fukuoka, with 84 SDs and 200 SBs, and Sapporo, sitting at Number 8 with 54 SDs and 96 SBs and the only city on the list from Japan’s smaller northern island of Hokkaido.
And while Sugar Babies across Japan live vastly different lifestyles and have various motivations for jumping into the Sugar Bowl, one thing is pervasive among responses from our Japanese SBs: The simplicity of companionship. One other anonymous, Tokyo-based SB wraps it up perfectly.
“As far as I know, most people are open to this demand, and many women will look for different feelings, and they will look for different stimuli. … The most likely to need this requirement will be girls who have just graduated or are in their twenties and thirties, and they will be more inclined to accompany and care.”
